The life of Fruits and Vegetables
Food in its many forms, from creation to harvesting, preparation, consumption, is a cornerstone of our existence. Food images are created again and again in countless synthetic interpretations, and will no doubt remain as long as art and food exist in the world. Through this photographic series I experiment with the visual and semantic power of food and what is related to it. My intention is to extol its use and influence, both in its nutritional value and in the dominant importance it has now acquired in modern life. I try to capture the subjects of these compositions through the lens, either as highly paid models among unassumingly pretentious folds of fabric, or as uncanny sculptures created through odd combinations of food, fabrics and related objects. Influenced by paintings of the great masters of the 17th century, but also combining the modern perspective, I intent to create images that carry a theatricality to a great degree. As humble fruits and vegetables appear relatively pompously as decorative objects, they acquire a quality different from that of their own nature. They win a dominant position in the image that is also conveyed visually to our perception and perhaps through this process Food that we take so much for granted, will earn a bigger place as something valuable in our consciousness.
